Iranian FM calls for reform of UN Security Council

15 May 2026 13:41

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for reform of the United Nations Security Council, saying the issue is “not a choice but a necessity for the survival of the United Nations.”

Speaking at a BRICS meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi said Tehran wants to see a Security Council that “truly represents all continents and regions of the world,” adding that BRICS should use its potential to reshape global governance and restore trust in multilateralism, Caliber.Az reports.

In a statement posted on his Telegram channel, Araghchi emphasised the need for fundamental reforms in international institutions, particularly the UN Security Council.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran underlines the necessity of fundamental reforms in international organisations, especially in the UN Security Council. Our reforms are reforms for the ‘fair distribution of power,’ not merely a change of name or membership. We seek an order in which:

• Justice replaces power,
• Sovereignty is paramount,
• The rights of all peoples are respected,
• Cultural and political diversity is recognised,” he said.

He added that the use of law as a tool, unilateral sanctions, and disregard for national sovereignty reflect a deep crisis in global governance.
