Iran, Iraq unite in call for Syria’s stability, sovereignty

08 January 2025 18:36

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasized the importance of ensuring Syria's stability and territorial integrity, highlighting shared concerns between Tehran and Baghdad over the situation in the war-torn nation.

At a joint press conference in Tehran on January 8, President Pezeshkian said, "We have had constructive discussions on regional developments and enhancing bilateral cooperation," Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

Both leaders underscored their mutual apprehensions regarding Syria. "Iran and Iraq share concerns about the developments in Syria," Pezeshkian stated, stressing the need for peace, stability, and the protection of Syria’s territorial sovereignty.

He added, "We firmly support efforts to combat terrorist groups and call for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Syrian territories."

The Iranian president also highlighted the ongoing threat of terrorism. "The potential resurgence of terrorist cells remains a pressing concern. This underlines the necessity for vigilance and close cooperation between our two countries," he remarked.

In addition to regional issues, Pezeshkian referenced discussions on a comprehensive cooperation agreement between Iran and Iraq, along with the implementation of a bilateral security pact.

Describing Iraq as a "strategic partner," he said, "Iran has always stood for peace, stability, and development for its neighbours. The security, progress, and welfare of the Iraqi people are of great importance to us."

Prime Minister al-Sudani, who arrived in Tehran earlier on January 8, with a high-ranking delegation, is on an official visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
