Iran orders closure of Strait of Hormuz to shipping over ceasefire breaches

20 June 2026 17:30

Iran’s military headquarters has announced it will close the Strait of Hormuz to vessel traffic, saying the move is a response to what it described as violations by the United States and Israel of agreements linked to ending regional hostilities.

The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said on Saturday (June 20) the decision was taken due to what it called Washington’s failure to implement the first clause of a ceasefire-related agreement, as well as continued breaches of a truce in southern Lebanon, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

It also accused Israel of failing to withdraw from southern Lebanese territory, which it said constituted a further violation of ceasefire understandings.

The headquarters said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would be the “first step” in Iran’s response to what it described as “enemy breaches of commitments”, adding that further measures could follow if attacks continue.
