Iran outlines details of new temporary Strait of Hormuz shipping route

06 August 2026 08:34

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has said that the safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz currently under discussion with Oman will be temporary, speaking in an interview with IRNA.

“This route, which is currently being negotiated with Oman, is considered temporary and could remain in place for between two and four months,” the diplomat noted.

He said the arrangement reflects a new model for managing the Strait of Hormuz aimed at strengthening Iran's effective sovereignty while safeguarding its national security and strategic interests.

The deputy foreign minister stressed that the plan is not intended to disrupt navigation, adding that under peaceful conditions, normal maritime traffic through the strait would continue uninterrupted.

Under the proposed arrangement, the northern route near Larak Island and the southern route through Omani waters would be closed. Most of the new passage would run through Iran's territorial waters, with the remaining section passing through Omani waters.
