Iran publicly executes man for rape, murder of child

Iran has carried out the public execution of a man convicted of raping and murdering a young girl in the country’s northwestern West Azerbaijan Province, according to the official judiciary news outlet Mizan Online.

The execution by hanging was carried out after the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic upheld the death sentence, which had been initially handed down in March. The crime occurred in the city of Bukan, and the case reportedly sparked widespread public outrage.

“This case received special attention due to the emotional impact it had on public opinion,” said Nasser Atabati, the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province.
