Iran raises petrol costs for big consumers

13 December 2025 10:12

Iran has implemented a new petrol tariff, with drivers consuming more than 160 litres per month losing access to subsidised prices.

Under the updated regulations, the first 60 litres of petrol per month will cost 15,000 rials per litre, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The next 100 litres will be charged at 30,000 rials per litre, while any consumption beyond 160 litres will be priced at 50,000 rials per litre.

Subsidised petrol will not be available to owners of imported vehicles, cars with licence plates registered in free economic zones, or vehicles with government plates, except for ambulances. The changes will not affect owners of newly manufactured domestic vehicles.

A resident of Iran’s capital noted that the rise in fuel prices could place additional strain on Tehran’s public transport system, which may not be prepared for it.

The changes are likely to force people to rethink their daily routes, as taxis may become unaffordable for some, leading to more crowding on public transport during peak hours.

Another citizen believes that the increase in petrol prices will affect not only the transport sector but could also act as a trigger for rising costs of goods and services in other areas.
