Iran reaffirms right to peaceful nuclear energy, slams US for contradictory messaging

05 May 2025 16:46

Iran has strongly reaffirmed its inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and enrich uranium under the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while condemning the United States for sending mixed signals on the nuclear issue.

Speaking at a press conference on May 5, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei dismissed recent remarks by the US president calling for the full dismantlement of Iran's nuclear program. He emphasised that Tehran's positions remain steadfast and grounded in international law, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

“What is clear is that Iran’s principled stances on the peaceful use of nuclear energy are its legitimate rights,” Baqaei stated. “It is Iran’s right to enjoy membership in the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the right to enrichment.”

Baqaei reiterated that Iran continues to engage in indirect talks with the United States, focused solely on nuclear issues and the lifting of sanctions. He cautioned against the introduction of what he described as "irrelevant demands," saying such moves would hinder progress in the negotiations.

Responding to questions on the state of Iran-US dialogue, Baqaei underscored Iran’s practical commitment to continuing diplomatic efforts. He added that Oman, which serves as a mediator in the talks, is expected to share its perspective on the upcoming round of negotiations.

The Iranian official also voiced criticism of what he termed "contradictory messages" from American officials, citing the US president’s recent warning to global buyers of Iranian oil and petrochemicals as an example of Washington’s inconsistent approach.

“These paradoxical US policies cannot influence Iran’s resolve to pursue its principles,” Baqaei declared. “If the American side is sincere in its demand that Iran should not possess nuclear bombs, I believe that many problems can be resolved.”

Baqaei also issued a warning against any attempt to trigger the snapback mechanism embedded in the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “We see no reason to activate it. The fact that certain parties are abusing the situation is rejected,” he stated.

On May 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of secondary sanctions on any entities purchasing Iranian oil or petrochemical products, as part of his "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran. These sanctions prohibit sanctioned parties from conducting business with the United States. The move follows strained negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, with the fourth round of talks between the U.S. and Iran, scheduled in Rome, being postponed. The new sanctions aim to drive Iranian oil exports to near zero
