Iran redirected imports via Russia, Caspian Sea to counter US naval blockade

21 July 2026 12:44

Iran has redirected imports through Russia and the Caspian Sea to mitigate the impact of the renewed US naval blockade, Deputy Agriculture Minister Mohammad Reza Talaei said.

“By changing the route from the Indian Ocean to one passing through Russia and the Caspian Sea, we were able to counter the threat of a complete economic blockade,” Talai said in an interview with the IRNA news agency.

According to the deputy minister, more than 30% of Iran’s imported goods now pass through the country’s northern ports. He said the ports primarily handle agricultural products, helping to safeguard Iran’s food security.

Talai added that the US blockade “has not caused any disruptions to the supply of goods on the domestic market.”

The United States resumed its naval blockade of Iran on July 14.
