20 February 2026 12:47

Iranian and Russian environmental officials held a bilateral meeting to discuss Caspian Sea issues and the implementation of the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea Environment.

The meeting, hosted by the Russian Foreign Ministry, is part of broader efforts to strengthen strategic and regional cooperation between the two countries, Mehr News Agency reports.

The Iranian delegation was led by Azami, Head of the Caspian Sea Department at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Russian side was headed by Sergey Kononuchenko, Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for Climate Change.

During the consultations, the delegations exchanged views on a range of issues, including preparations for the seventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention, which will be hosted by Iran, and the establishment of a Tehran Convention Secretariat in the region.

The officials also discussed the joint responsibility and collective efforts of Caspian Sea littoral states in preserving and protecting the sea’s environment, as well as the implementation of the Tehran Convention protocols to combat pollution. Plans to address the consequences and impacts of the declining Caspian Sea water level were also on the agenda.
