Iran’s capital faces potential water shortage amid drought
03 November 2025 20:05
Tehran could run out of drinking water within two weeks, officials have warned, as the city grapples with a severe water crisis.
Behdad Parsa, director of Tehran’s water company, told Iranian media that the city’s water reserves are critically low, citing the impact of an unprecedented drought across Iran that has led to a near-total collapse in rainfall.
The Amir Kabir Dam, one of five key reservoirs supplying Tehran, currently holds just 14 million cubic metres of water—around 8% of its total capacity.
“At the current rate of consumption, the city’s water supplies could be exhausted within days,” Parsa said, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
