Iran's MFA condemns US airstrikes, says Tehran to defend sovereignty

27 June 2026 12:18

Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned U.S. airstrikes on targets along the country's southern coast, calling the attacks a violation of international law and reaffirming Tehran's right to self-defence.

In a statement, the ministry described the strikes as "barbaric attacks" targeting Iranian coastal surveillance facilities and said they constituted "a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the United Nations Charter," as well as a breach of the June 17, 2026, Memorandum of Understanding on the cessation of hostilities, Caliber.Az reports.

The ministry also accused Israel of carrying out coordinated attacks on Lebanon with U.S. support, alleging that the operation likewise violated the ceasefire agreement.

Iran said it would continue to defend its sovereignty, security and national interests under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognises the inherent right of self-defence. The ministry said Iranian strikes against targets linked to U.S. military forces had been conducted on that basis.

Tehran said the United States, along with any parties that facilitated its actions against Iran, bore full responsibility for the consequences of the current situation.

The ministry also called on countries along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf to uphold the principle of good-neighbourliness and respect international law by preventing their territory and resources from being used to carry out attacks against Iran.
