Iran’s new president outlines plans for strengthening relations with neighbors Achieving regional stability

13 July 2024 13:36

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has outlined his administration's plans to focus on enhancing relations with neighbouring countries and promoting regional stability.

Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of balanced and cooperative relationships with Iran’s neighbouring states, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.

"Under my administration, we will champion the establishment of a ‘strong region’ rather than one where a single country pursues hegemony and dominance over the others," Pezeshkian stated.

He expressed a desire for cooperation with Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and various regional organizations to deepen economic and diplomatic ties.

As an initial step, Pezeshkian's administration plans to "call on neighboring Arab countries to cooperate and leverage all political and diplomatic tools to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza," aiming for a comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Iranian president also outlined plans to strengthen ties with Russia and China.

Pezeshkian has outlined a strategic vision for deepening cooperation with key global partners Russia and China. The President’s agenda underscores a commitment to expanding both bilateral and multilateral relations, with a focus on global diplomacy and economic development.

Pezeshkian described Russia as a “valuable strategic ally and neighbor,” emphasizing that his administration will prioritize the enhancement of cooperative efforts with Moscow. He expressed a strong intent to engage in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, particularly highlighting the importance of structures such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and the Eurasia Economic Union (EEU).

“We strive for peace for the people of Russia and Ukraine, and my government will stand prepared to actively support initiatives aimed at achieving this objective,” Pezeshkian stated, reflecting Iran’s desire to play a constructive role in regional and global peace efforts.

The President also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to advancing relations with China, focusing on the “comprehensive strategic partnership” outlined in the 25-year roadmap agreed upon between the two nations.

Our 25-year roadmap with China represents a significant milestone towards establishing a mutually beneficial ‘comprehensive strategic partnership,’ and we look forward to collaborating more extensively with Beijing as we advance towards a new global order,” Pezeshkian said.

In addition to fostering stronger ties with Russia and China, Pezeshkian emphasized the significance of expanding Iran’s foreign relations to include new international players from the Global South. This includes a particular focus on strengthening ties with African countries and Latin American states as part of Iran’s broader foreign policy objectives.
