Iran's president rejects resignation reports as “complete lies”

04 August 2026 12:00

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has dismissed reports that he intends to resign, describing the claims as "complete lies and fabrications."

In a preview of an interview scheduled to be broadcast on Iranian state television, Pezeshkian said he remained committed to his role and coordinated closely with the country's armed forces, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“We are fully coordinated with the armed forces. I will not resign and I will stand my ground. If I were to resign, I would announce it officially,” Pezeshkian said.

His comments followed remarks by senior Shia cleric Mohammad-Bager Harrazi, who claimed that the president had threatened to resign "28 times" but had stopped after being warned that any future statement would be taken seriously.

The latest speculation follows similar reports earlier this year. In May, Iran International reported that Pezeshkian had allegedly submitted a resignation letter to the office of Iran's Supreme Leader, arguing that his administration had been excluded from key decision-making while authority had shifted to representatives of the country's conservative establishment.

Iranian authorities denied those reports at the time, and Pezeshkian's latest comments reaffirm his intention to remain in office.
