Iran’s president urges BRICS to lead global pushback against unilateralism

08 September 2025 21:12

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has underscored the critical role of the BRICS group in countering the growing threat of unilateralism and the misuse of sanctions, which he described as detrimental to global justice and stability.

Speaking at an extraordinary virtual meeting of BRICS leaders, President Pezeshkian argued that unilateral policies not only jeopardize the national interests of independent nations but also disrupt global cooperation and hinder sustainable development, Caliber.Az reports.

He emphasized the urgent need for a serious overhaul of global governance structures, calling for a reevaluation of the United Nations Security Council’s composition and functionality, as well as reforms in the international financial system. According to Pezeshkian, groups such as BRICS and other Global South institutions bear a unique responsibility in steering the global transition toward a multipolar, democratic, and equitable international order in which the voices of developing countries are adequately represented.

The Iranian president also drew attention to rising geopolitical tensions and the increasing impact of climate change, both of which he said are significant threats to economic growth and international peace. He criticized the disproportionate influence of a small number of powerful countries and condemned the politicization of economic tools, warning that such practices erode international trust and weaken effective global governance.

During his address, Pezeshkian proposed a series of initiatives for BRICS to consider, including reforming the international financial structure, promoting inclusive multilateralism by strengthening the United Nations and amplifying the voices of developing nations, ensuring equitable access to essential resources through cooperation on global public goods, establishing a support mechanism for member states facing illegal sanctions, fostering sustainable development by encouraging innovation and cooperation in green and digital economies.

Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to active collaboration within BRICS, asserting that effective countermeasures against unilateralism would benefit not only member states but the international community at large. He concluded his remarks by underlining the importance of bolstering multilateralism and upholding the principles of sustainable development to build a more just and resilient future.
