Iran's Revolutionary Guards warn ships against using unauthorised Hormuz routes

25 June 2026 09:31

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned vessels on June 25 against using any shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz that have not been approved by Tehran, saying such passages would be considered unsafe and could prompt action against violators.

In a statement carried by the Fars news agency, the IRGC said a new maritime route through the strategic waterway had been announced by unspecified authorities without prior coordination with the Islamic Republic.

"The route is unacceptable and entirely dangerous," the statement said.

The Guards said the only authorised transit corridors in the Strait of Hormuz were those designated by Iran and warned that navigation outside those routes was "extremely dangerous and prohibited".

The IRGC also said vessels passing through the strait must coordinate with its naval forces via Channel 16, an international maritime radio frequency commonly used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications.

"Appropriate measures will be taken against violating vessels," the statement added, without providing further details.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most important oil shipping chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude exports passing through the narrow waterway each day.

Iran has repeatedly emphasised its role in maintaining security in the Gulf and has previously issued warnings regarding navigation and military activity in the area.
