Iran says key sections of potential deal with US near completion

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson has said that major sections of a potential understanding aimed at ending the “imposed war” are close to completion, despite what he described as contradictory U.S. positions and military actions that have disrupted the diplomatic process.

In an interview on the evening of June 11, foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei rejected media speculation about a finalised agreement and reaffirmed what he called Iran’s “resolute and principled stance," Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media. 

“Textually, the text has almost been finalised in its major parts. The problem is that the contradictory positions of the United States have always caused turbulence and disruption in this process,” Baghaei stated.

He said Iran had entered the negotiations in good faith and with full responsibility, but accused U.S. officials of repeatedly shifting positions, introducing new demands, and carrying out military actions during ongoing talks.

He emphasised that the Islamic Republic entered the diplomatic process with goodwill and full responsibility, while American officials "have repeatedly shifted positions, raised unrealistic new demands, and even carried out military attacks during the negotiations."

Baghaei further noted that since a declared ceasefire in April, both the United States and Israel had repeatedly violated the truce.

He added that mediators from Pakistan and Qatar continue their efforts, but said the diplomatic process has been affected by what he called “America’s illegal aggressions.”

Baghaei concluded by reiterating Iran’s position that in any negotiation or agreement, the country remains focused on safeguarding its national interests and the rights of the Iranian people.
