Iran says new US sanctions seek to extend American jurisdiction abroad
22 August 2026 10:02
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said new US economic sanctions against Iran go beyond exerting pressure on Tehran and are aimed at extending US jurisdiction to other independent states.
“No state has the right to compel foreign banks, businesses or airports under the exclusive jurisdiction of their own sovereign authority to refrain from lawful trade with a third country,” Baghaei said.
He argued that the combination of sanctions and a naval blockade poses a threat to the broader system of international relations and could undermine national sovereignty.
