Iran says no plans to restore full internet access
An Iranian lawmaker has said that authorities have no plans to restore unrestricted internet access, arguing that the country continues to face security threats despite being in what he described as a “neither war nor peace” situation.
Ali Yazdikhah, deputy head of the Iranian parliament’s cultural committee, said that internet restrictions imposed by the Supreme National Security Council would remain in place, Iran International reports.
According to Yazdikhah, access to the international internet will continue to be limited to individuals and organisations considered to have specialised professional needs.
He also defended the restrictions by claiming that domestic online platforms are capable of meeting “more than 90 percent” of the public’s needs.
Iran has repeatedly imposed internet restrictions during periods of political unrest and heightened regional tensions, citing national security concerns.
