Iran seizes large cache of smuggled weapons

Iranian border guards have foiled an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of firearms into the country in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

During the operation, security forces discovered and confiscated 15 handguns, one Kalashnikov assault rifle and 186 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which is predominantly populated by Sunni Baluch communities, has been one of Iran's main centres of unrest, frequently witnessing anti-government protests and clashes with security forces.
