Iran signals willingness to strike nuclear deal with Trump On one key condition

15 May 2025 09:35

Iran has expressed readiness to enter into a nuclear agreement with US President Donald Trump, provided that Washington lifts all economic sanctions imposed on Tehran without delay.

The statement came from Ali Shamkhani, a top advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

Shamkhani emphasised that Iran is willing to take a series of significant steps under a potential deal — but only in return for tangible economic relief.

According to Shamkhani, Iran is prepared to:

  • Commit irrevocably to never developing or producing nuclear weapons;

  • Dispose of its existing stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which could otherwise be weaponised;

  • Limit uranium enrichment strictly to lower levels suitable for civilian energy and medical purposes;

  • Allow full access to international inspectors to monitor and verify its compliance with the terms of the agreement.

“These steps can be implemented, but only in exchange for the immediate lifting of all economic sanctions,” Shamkhani told NBC. When asked whether Iran would sign such a deal today if the sanctions were removed, he replied directly: “Yes.”

“It’s still possible,” Shamkhani added. “If the Americans act according to what they say, then certainly we can have better relations. This could lead to an improvement in the situation in the near future.”

His comments followed a mixed message from President Trump, who earlier the same day extended what he described as an “olive branch” to Iran, suggesting openness to renewed diplomacy. However, the offer was accompanied by warnings of harsher sanctions if Tehran refuses to accept a deal that would curb its nuclear ambitions.

Shamkhani voiced frustration over what he described as the contradictory tone of the US administration, offering dialogue on one hand while issuing threats with the other. “The threats continue,” he said, expressing concern that such rhetoric undermines the prospects of any meaningful breakthrough.

The latest exchange highlights both the possibility and fragility of renewed nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, as both sides weigh the cost and benefit of re-engaging amid mounting regional tensions and a shifting geopolitical landscape.
