Iran takes swipe at Canada over support for Washington

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned Canada for supporting the United States in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

In a post on X, he mocked Ottawa for backing Washington despite what he described as repeated pressure and insults from the United States, Caliber.Az reports.

Washington calls Canada its 51st state;

Washington imposes tariffs on Canadian goods;

Washington insults Canada and threatens to punish it over wildfire smoke;

His statement came in response to sanctions previously announced by Canada against five senior Iranian officials.

On August 14, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that her country was imposing additional sanctions on five senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), over actions that threaten a critical international waterway and impede navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz in violation of international law.

Those sanctioned include Ali Abdollahi, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces; Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the General Staff; Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee; Shahram Irani, commander of the Iranian Army’s Navy; and Hamid Hosseini, a representative of Iran’s Union of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Exporters.
