Iran threatens to “take back” frozen funds

28 May 2026 17:32

Iran has threatened to “take back” billions of dollars in frozen assets, as tensions continue over stalled negotiations with the United States on a potential deal involving sanctions relief and nuclear restrictions.

“Trump will not give us our stolen money, we will take it back,” the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Hyderabad, India wrote on X, Caliber.Az reports.

The dispute centres on Iranian funds held in foreign banks, which Tehran says must be released before meaningful negotiations can proceed. Iranian state media reported on May 26 that access to the frozen money remains a key sticking point in talks.

On May 27, Trump also addressed the issue during a cabinet meeting, saying: “We have control of money that they claim is theirs. We’ll keep control of that money. When they behave properly, and when they do what’s right, we’ll let them have their money. But right now, we’re not doing that.”
