Iran to continue military support for Syria, says Foreign Ministry spokesman
Iran will continue to support the Syrian government in its fight against rebel forces, said Esmail Baghaei, the official spokesman of the country’s Foreign Ministry.
Baghaei confirmed that Iranian military advisers have been present in Syria at the invitation of the Syrian government since the onset of the conflict, providing critical assistance in the battle against opposition groups, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
He emphasized that this support would persist in accordance with the wishes of the Syrian government.
Baghaei also pointed out the death of Kioumars Pourhashemi, a senior military advisor in Syria, who was killed during an attack in Aleppo on November 28.
"We recently bid farewell to a great commander," Baghaei remarked, emphasizing the continued commitment of Iranian forces in Syria.
According to Baghaei, Iran is deeply concerned about the ongoing developments in Syria and is actively engaged in dialogue with key participants of the Astana process—Russia and Türkiye, both of which are guarantors of the Syrian peace settlement. "The Astana format has been one of the most effective mechanisms for resolving the Syrian crisis... We continue to support this format," the diplomat emphasized.
On November 28, The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an elite branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, reported the death of Brigadier General Kioumars Pourhashemi during a terrorist attack in northern Syria.
