Iran to host seventh Tehran Convention conference in September

Iran will host the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention on September 23, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said.

Speaking at an event marking Iran’s National Caspian Sea Day, Gharibabadi said the five Caspian littoral states had agreed to hold the meeting in Tehran, with senior officials expected to attend, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media. 

“With the agreement of the littoral states, the conditions have been prepared for holding the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Tehran Convention in Tehran. God willing, we will hold the meeting on September 23 with the participation of senior officials from the five littoral states,” he said.

Gharibabadi called on the Caspian states to begin preparations and coordination ahead of the meeting, given the limited time remaining.

He said the gathering could provide an opportunity to discuss issues of common interest, strengthen bilateral and multilateral contacts, exchange views and lay the groundwork for closer cooperation.

“We must use this presence to strengthen Caspian diplomacy,” Gharibabadi said.

Separately, Nabiollah Azami, head of Iran’s Caspian Sea Secretariat, said that Iran’s “share of the Caspian Sea” had not been determined by the convention.

Azami also warned that failure to implement the convention could create conditions for a greater presence and role for non-littoral states in the Caspian region.
