Iran to make verdict for perpetrator of terrorist attack at Azerbaijani embassy soon
Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Nasser Kanaani has said that the verdict for the perpetrator of the terrorist attack at the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran will be pronounced soon.
Kanaani made these remarks at the briefing on January 29, Report informs citing Iranian media.
He noted that the Iranian judicial authorities have assured that they will consider the charges within the law.
“The investigation was completed in cooperation with the representatives of the Azerbaijani justice. The judge assured that the verdict will be pronounced soon,” he said.
Kanaani noted that the incident had a negative impact on relations between Baku and Tehran.
“However, the Iranian authorities tried to reduce this negative impact to a minimum. Over the past year, meetings have been held at the delegation level in various fields. We hope that the activity of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran will be resumed soon,” he said.
An armed attack occurred in the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran on January 27, 2023. One Azerbaijani security officer was killed and two others were wounded.
The gunman, identified as Yasin Hosseinzadeh, was armed with a Kalashnikov rifle when he broke into the embassy building and killed the Azerbaijani officer. He was eventually stopped by the embassy’s security staff after a violent scuffle.
Diplomatic activity at the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was completely suspended following the incident. However, a few employees remained in the Iranian capital to protect the embassy building and property.
