Iran triggers exclusive OIC meeting to address regional crisis

A special meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) will take place in Istanbul on the evening of June 21, following a formal request by Iran. 

The gathering is part of the 51st session of the CFM and will be hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at the Lütfi Kırdar Congress Centre, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

According to diplomatic sources within Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the special session will be held behind closed doors, with participation from all OIC member states.

The 51st CFM session, themed “The OIC in a Transforming World,” spans two days and is chaired by Foreign Minister Fidan. It has drawn a record number of attendees, with foreign ministers from more than 40 countries present. In total, representatives from the 57 OIC member states, as well as roughly 1,000 delegates from observer nations and international organisations, are taking part.

Key topics on the agenda include the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict, prospects for resolving it through a two-state solution, heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, and initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation among Muslim societies in the face of shared global challenges.

By the conclusion of the summit, delegates are expected to adopt the Istanbul Declaration and approve several draft decisions shaping the future course of the OIC’s work.

Türkiye has previously hosted sessions of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in 1976, 1991, and 2004. With the current session, it will assume the one-year rotating chairmanship of the Council.
