Iran: US "Economic D-Day" masks Washington’s own debt crisis

20 August 2026 11:37

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has criticised the United States’ planned “Economic D-Day” against Iran, saying the campaign is intended to divert attention from Washington’s own economic problems.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America's own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” Araghchi said in a post on X.

He argued that continuing what he described as failed US policies would result in “further defeat” and increase hostility among Iranians.

“US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” Araghchi added.

Earlier, Trump announced what he called an unprecedented campaign of “economic warfare and isolation” against Iran, warning that countries and entities providing financial or logistical support to Tehran will face severe economic consequences.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran had failed to seize an opportunity to reach a deal with Washington and declared the new campaign an “ECONOMIC D-DAY”. He claimed Iran’s military capabilities and economy had been severely weakened.

Trump also threatened action against financial institutions, businesses, airports and government entities facilitating oil smuggling, cash transfers, exchange operations or other economic ties with Iran.
