Iranian Army signals readiness to join international peacekeeping missions

01 June 2025 16:57

The Iranian Army Ground Force has officially expressed its readiness to participate in international peacekeeping missions under the framework of the United Nations.

Brigadier General Kioumars Heidari, commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force, stated on June 1 that Iran is committed to upholding peace in line with the UN Charter, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

He emphasised that the Army Ground Force stands ready to engage in peacekeeping operations, following international regulations and protocols.

Describing the Iranian Army as both “professional and popular,” General Heidari said the force acts as a guardian of peace and morality, guided by Islamic teachings that promote welfare and justice for all nations. He reiterated Iran’s dedication to safeguarding international peace and stability, ensuring justice, and resisting the domination of oppressive powers.

“Peace does not mean merely the prevention of war,” Heidari explained. “It also entails supporting oppressed nations and combating terrorism.”

Highlighting the benefits of active participation in peacekeeping missions, the general noted that such involvement would allow Iran to share its military experience and present a realistic image of its armed forces on the global stage.

In related remarks at a press conference, Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, affirmed the country’s willingness to contribute to UN peacekeeping efforts. Baqaei pointed out that Iran had communicated this readiness during a recent high-level meeting in Berlin, underscoring Tehran’s commitment to protecting peace in conflict zones worldwide.

Notably, Iran has traditionally maintained a cautious stance toward participating in international military coalitions, emphasising sovereignty and non-interference in other nations' affairs. However, Tehran has consistently voiced support for global peace and stability, often framing its foreign policy through the lens of Islamic principles and resistance to foreign domination.

The United Nations peacekeeping missions, established to help countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace, rely on contributions from member states to provide military, police, and civilian personnel. These missions operate under the UN Charter and aim to maintain ceasefires, protect civilians, assist in disarmament, and support political processes.

Today, there are over a dozen active UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, deployed in regions including Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. These missions require contributions from a diverse range of countries to provide personnel, expertise, and resources.
