Iranian authorities say 3,000 arrested during protests amid conflicting reports
17 January 2026 11:33
Iranian authorities have reported the arrest of at least 3,000 people during recent nationwide protests, describing the detainees as “members of terrorist groups,” according to a report by EFE cited by Caliber.Az.
The arrests come amid weeks of unrest, with Iranian security services claiming that those detained were involved in the demonstrations. Officials have not provided further details about the identities or conditions of the detainees.
However, human rights organisation HRANA, operating outside Iran, says the actual number of arrests is significantly higher — more than 19,000 people. HRANA noted that despite internet restrictions and limited access to information, it was able to verify these figures.
