Iranian FM, his deputy invited to 62nd Munich Security Conference
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his deputy confirmed attendance at the 62nd Munich Security Conference following their invitation, according to Euractiv.
The invitation has sparked criticism in Germany. BILD political commentator Philipp Fabian condemned the decision, stating: “In recent days, Iran’s mullah regime has killed thousands demanding an end to the sharia dictatorship. Apparently, this is no reason for the Munich Security Conference to disinvite their representatives!”
He added that the Iranian regime had shut down the internet five days ago to carry out its killings in secret.
Amid the ongoing crackdown in Iran, discussions in Brussels are underway on new sanctions, the possible designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, and the expulsion of all Iranian ambassadors from the European Union.
Bijan Djir-Sarai, a member of the Free Democratic Party’s state leadership in North Rhine–Westphalia, and Volker Beck, head of the German-Israeli Society, have called for Araghchi to be declared persona non grata.
“And the foreign minister [Abbas Araghchi] is supposed to just come to Munich’s Bayerischer Hof hotel as if nothing had happened? That’s unacceptable and shameful,” Bijan Djir-Sarai noted.
The Munich Security Conference has so far not responded to BILD’s inquiry.
