Iranian Foreign Ministry: June 15 nuclear talks with US not yet cancelled

14 June 2025 12:20

Despite rising tensions following Israel’s major military strike, Iran has not yet officially cancelled the upcoming round of nuclear talks with the United States, originally scheduled for June 15 in Muscat.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, told NourNews that no final decision had been made on whether the dialogue would proceed as planned.

“It is still unclear what decision we will make on 15 June on this matter,” Baghaei said, adding uncertainty to an already strained diplomatic situation.

His remarks follow earlier statements in which Baghaei had cast serious doubt on the value of continued negotiations. After Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iranian targets, which reportedly killed senior military figures and nuclear scientists, Baghaei declared that talks with Washington had become “meaningless.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, and indeed anyone in the world, will not believe that the Zionist regime could have carried out such reckless aggression and ignited a war in the region without cooperation with the United States, coordination of its actions with them, or at least without obtaining their conscious permission,” he said, accusing the US of complicity in the Israeli operation.

The United States has firmly denied any involvement in the Israeli attacks and has urged Tehran, during a United Nations Security Council session, to pursue negotiations. A US representative said it would be “wise” for Iran to engage in dialogue over its nuclear programme.

Iran, however, remains adamant that its uranium enrichment activities are strictly for civilian use. The government has repeatedly rejected Israeli accusations that it is covertly working toward a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump acknowledged in an interview with Reuters that his administration had been aware of Israel’s planned strikes. Nonetheless, he insisted that diplomatic avenues remain open and that his team still sees a potential path toward a nuclear agreement with Tehran.
