Iranian lawmaker calls for “nationalization” of Strait of Hormuz

A spokesman for the Iranian parliament’s presidium, Abbas Goudarzi, has said that Tehran intends to “nationalize” the Strait of Hormuz.

Goudarzi made the remarks in a public statement, linking the proposal to Iran’s historical experience with resource nationalization, ISNA reports.

“When oil was nationalized, history assessed the significance of that decision at that moment in time. Today, we want to nationalize the Strait of Hormuz,” Goudarzi said.

The lawmaker’s comments reference 1951, when, under the initiative of then-Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, Iran nationalized its oil industry. Following the decision, the authorities established state control over the country’s oil and gas sector.
