Iranian lawmaker says Washington–Tehran memorandum shows “US failure”

20 June 2026 13:40

A member of Iran’s parliament’s presiding board has said the country remains prepared for confrontation despite what he described as a period of peace, framing a recent memorandum with Washington as a setback for the United States.

Farshad Ebrahimpour, speaking to the semi-official ISNA news agency, said Tehran had not altered its security posture in light of the agreement. He said Iran had “never tied its security to political agreements,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

He also characterised the memorandum between Iran and Washington as evidence of US weakness, describing it as “a US defeat” and warning that Iran’s readiness remained unchanged, with its hand still “on the trigger” even in peacetime.

Ebrahimpour’s comments reflect a broader line taken by hardline figures in Iran, who have increasingly portrayed understandings with Washington not as a move towards de-escalation but as a temporary pause in a continuing strategic confrontation.
