Iranian leader reassures new Hamas chief of steadfast support for Palestinian cause

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed Tehran's support for the Palestinian cause as he congratulated the leader of the Gaza-based Hamas group. 

During a telephone conversation with the newly appointed leader of Hamas' political bureau, Khalil al-Hayya, the Iranian president reiterated Iran's commitment to assisting the Palestinian people, Caliber.Az reports citing the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB.

According to their reporting, Pezeshkian told al-Hayya that the Palestinian issue remains a central pillar of Iran's foreign policy despite recent military confrontations involving the United States and Israel.

“Despite these challenges, the Palestinian issue remains at the centre of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, remains the focus of the country's leadership, decision-makers and the Supreme Leader of Iran, and continues to be the foremost issue of the Islamic world. Iran will spare no effort in assisting the Palestinian people,” Pezeshkian said.

In the course of the phone conversation, the Iranian leader also touched upon the recent US and Israeli military operations against Iran, while emphasising that Tehran's support for Palestine remained unchanged.

Al-Hayya, in turn, praised Iran's position in the face of what he described as regional threats, saying the country had helped shape "new realities" in the Middle East.

He also described Israel as “the main factor of instability in the region” and recalled that Hamas continues political negotiations in coordination with other Palestinian factions.

The Hamas political bureau chief additionally called for making use of the experience of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its officials during negotiations aimed at securing the interests of the Palestinian people.
