Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate hospitalized amid health crisis

28 October 2024 15:22

Iranian authorities have permitted imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to be hospitalized after nearly nine weeks of illness, according to a statement by the Free Narges Coalition, which advocates for her release.

The coalition emphasized that Mohammadi requires a medical furlough to receive comprehensive treatment for various health issues, arguing that mere transfer to a hospital will not remedy the serious conditions resulting from prolonged neglect and deprivation, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

Currently held in Iran's notorious Evin Prison, known for housing political prisoners and those with Western connections, Mohammadi is already serving a 30-month sentence, which was extended by an additional 15 months in January. Recently, Iranian authorities imposed another six-month sentence following her protest against the execution of a fellow political prisoner in the women’s ward of Evin Prison on August 6.

Mohammadi suffers from heart disease, and a medical report from September indicated that her heart's main artery has developed a serious complication. The coalition continues to call for her unconditional release and full access to necessary medical care.

At 52 years old, Mohammadi is the 19th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and the second Iranian woman to do so, following human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, who won in 2003. Despite numerous arrests and years of incarceration, Mohammadi has remained steadfast in her activism.

Iranian authorities have allowed imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to be hospitalized after almost nine weeks of feeling sick, a group campaigning for the activist said.
