Iranian president advocates indirect response to avoid escalation with Israel
10 August 2024 10:23
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is opposing a direct strike on Israel in response to the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh.
Pezeshkian is advocating for targeted strikes on Israeli military facilities located outside Israel to avoid severe regional escalation, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He is concerned that a direct attack on Israel could lead to serious repercussions and cites past luck in avoiding a full-scale war with Israel.
In contrast, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which supports a more aggressive stance, is pushing for a direct attack. Ultimately, Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will decide on the country's response.
