Iranian president says his monthly salary equals $1,000

13 February 2026 11:19

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking critically about the country’s economic conditions, revealed the size of his salary and pointed to the impact of currency devaluation.

Recalling his tenure at the Ministry of Health during the presidency of former President Mohammad Khatami, he said that at the time, 6,000 tomans were equivalent to $6,000. “Due to the depreciation of the national currency, today I receive $1,000 as president,” he stated.

Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting in Golestan province dedicated to reviewing progress in the implementation of the healthcare referral system as part of his regional visits.

He emphasised the need to reform management approaches and place greater focus on public health. “Responsibility for society’s health lies with you,” he said, addressing medical professionals. “In this process, the ministry must play a supportive role. University faculty members, doctors, nurses and midwives should work together to propose practical solutions that ensure public satisfaction.”

Referring to the family doctor model, Pezeshkian described it as the most effective way to deliver accountable, high-quality, equitable and transparent services. At the same time, he noted that if specialists propose a better alternative, the government is prepared to allocate the necessary resources to implement it in the province. He encouraged joint decision-making among physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the population.

“The health of the people is the foundation of society,” he said. “Every individual who receives proper care will be satisfied. We are not approaching this from a political perspective. The sole objective is the health and well-being of the nation. The scientific potential and capabilities of our healthcare system are unparalleled. With cooperation, we can quickly resolve the region’s problems.”

Despite financial constraints, he stressed that preventive care and medical centres must be given priority and provided with a substantial and sufficient budget. He added that even within existing funding limits, it is possible to establish solid and reliable contracts with healthcare institutions.

In a separate appearance on September 16, 2024, Pezeshkian addressed questions about his personal income and campaign spending. He said he had lacked funds to operate a campaign headquarters and relied on supporters who contributed or even lent him money and dollars, which he later repaid in full.

When asked about his salary, he said he did not know the exact figure, but had been told that 60–70 million tomans — roughly $1,000 — are deposited into his account each month. He added that he does not monitor his pay and has no need to spend it. “The time for chasing money has passed for me,” he said. “I do not seek office, status or property. At this stage of my life, none of that concerns me. My only goal is for the people to hold their heads high with pride and live in comfort.”
