Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Pakistan's army chief, General Asim Munir, during a one-day visit to Islamabad on June 23, with the two sides discussing defence cooperation and regional developments.

The meeting focused on expanding strategic ties, particularly in the defence sector, and enhancing bilateral coordination on security matters, according to Iranian media.

Pezeshkian and Munir also exchanged views on regional issues amid ongoing contacts between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Islamabad for a state visit, marking his first overseas trip since the armed confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside senior cabinet ministers, welcomed him on arrival, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The visit comes amid heightened regional sensitivities following months of instability triggered by the conflict, which saw exchanges of strikes across the Middle East before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Islamabad played a mediating role during the de-escalation process, according to regional officials.

In a statement, Iran’s embassy in Islamabad said Pezeshkian’s trip is intended to convey Tehran’s appreciation for Pakistan’s “solidarity and diplomatic efforts” during the crisis, as well as to reaffirm the two countries’ longstanding bilateral relationship.

Talks during the visit are expected to focus on expanding trade, strengthening energy cooperation, enhancing border security coordination, and improving regional connectivity. Officials also indicated that both sides will review ongoing diplomatic engagement and broader regional developments.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold formal meetings with Zardari and Sharif, as well as with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
