Iranians rally again in Yerevan as police block march, detain participants

17 January 2026 14:50

Iranians have once again staged a protest outside the Iranian Embassy in Yerevan.

Demonstrators attempted to march toward the Blue Mosque, but police blocked the route. Several participants who tried to proceed with the march were detained, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media outlets.

Following the detentions, the protesters began a sit-in. Police called on them to end the demonstration in front of the embassy and warned that force and special measures would be used if they refused to disperse.

The protesters in Yerevan are demanding an end to the bloodshed in Iran and the resignation of the country’s religious leadership.

Earlier, Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shirgholami, criticised the protests held in recent days outside the embassy. He stated that officials in Tehran now have “the impression that Armenia is becoming a centre of activity for forces hostile to Iran.”
