Irans reasserts its commitment to avenge Haniyeh’s assassination

05 September 2024 13:24

Iranian senior military officer, Brig. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, has underscored Iran’s commitment to retaliate against the Israeli regime for the assassination of senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.

Speaking at a ceremony in Koumeleh, a city in northwestern Iran, Abdollahi emphasized that Iran's resolve to respond should not be underestimated, Caliber.Az informs, citing Iranian media.

“The Zionist regime should not entertain the notion that Iran will forgo a response to this atrocity,” he declared. Abdollahi referenced remarks made by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, who had previously vowed a “harsh response” to the assassination.

Abdollahi further indicated that the timing of the response would be determined by Khamenei and senior military commanders, highlighting that Iran remains steadfast in its commitment to defending its sovereignty and responding to any violations.

Haniyeh was assassinated alongside one of his bodyguards in the Iranian capital Tehran on July 31, a day after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned the Israeli regime of a "harsh response" for the assassination of Haniyeh, saying the Islamic Republic must avenge the blood of the Palestinian resistance leader.
