Iraq’s prime minister orders air defence system upgrade
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani directed the development and modernisation of the country’s air defence systems amid rising tensions in the Middle East, his office reported on Facebook.
According to the statement, al-Sudani held a meeting in Baghdad with the Chief of Staff of the Army and senior officers from the Ministry of Defence and the Military Industry Authority to discuss strengthening Baghdad’s air defences.
The meeting also emphasised the government’s commitment to developing all military units within the country’s security forces and enhancing their operational and technical capabilities in line with broader strategic priorities and national security objectives.
Earlier this week, the Cabinet approved contracts for the procurement of air defence systems and measures to meet the operational requirements of relevant military units. Steps were also reviewed to resume flights over Iraqi airspace under conditions ensuring safety.
