Iraq scrambles security council after deadly US-Israeli airstrike
Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani convened an emergency meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security, following the killing of 15 Popular Mobilization Forces fighters in an airstrike in Al-Anbar province.
The strike, reportedly carried out by US and Israeli forces, targeted PMF-linked figures in the region, Shafaq News reports.
The Joint Operations Command condemned the attack, describing it as “an attempt to undermine Iraq’s security and stability, which would not weaken Iraqi forces.”
No immediate comment was available from US or Israeli officials regarding the reported airstrike.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in Iraq, where PMF factions—state-recognized groups comprising predominantly Shiite armed units—remain active in security and military operations.
Earlier reports stated that airstrikes on a facility belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq’s western Anbar province killed at least 10 fighters, including the PMF’s operations commander in Anbar, while another 30 people were injured.
