IRGC: Iran expands control zone in Strait of Hormuz tenfold
12 May 2026 16:41
Iran has significantly expanded its operational reach in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, covering waters from the city of Jask to Siri Island and further westward, Mohammad Akbarzadeh, Rear Admiral of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has stated.
Akbarzadeh said Iran’s naval control zone in the area has been expanded ten times, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
Previously, Iran’s area of influence was limited to a narrow 30-nautical-mile corridor between Hormuz and Hengam islands, it now reportedly extends to 200–300 nautical miles.
"In the past, the Strait of Hormuz was defined as a limited area around islands such as Hormuz and Hengam, but today this view has changed,” Akbarzadeh noted.
