Media: Iran strikes tanker over alleged use of US-backed transit route

An oil tanker attacked in the Strait of Hormuz was targeted after attempting to transit via the Omani route with assistance from the US Navy, according to Iran's state broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), as cited by Iran International.

The vessel came under attack after “ignoring repeated warnings,” the report added.

The broadcaster noted that no Iranian officials have so far confirmed or denied the claim.

Iran has previously warned vessels against using the southern route through Omani waters when crossing the Strait of Hormuz, maintaining that all transit through the strategic waterway must be coordinated with its military.
