Israel gears up for Gaza assault with four divisions on the move
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have begun preparing to capture Gaza City, with four divisions manoeuvring around the central part of the enclave and nearby areas.
Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval on August 21 to resume ground operations and seize control of the city, the army is also making plans to evacuate the Palestinian population from Gaza and move them south, Israeli media reports.
Recent discussions have outlined clear timelines: reservists called up by summons are expected to arrive in early September, and within about one to two weeks, forces are projected to reach full combat readiness for a large-scale operation. It is anticipated that a full-scale offensive could begin by mid-September.
However, disagreements emerged over the timing of the operation. While the political leadership has pushed to accelerate the start, the IDF emphasises the importance of responsible, measured preparation.
Israeli security officials note that several critical factors must be considered: the safety of hostages, the protection of IDF personnel, the evacuation of Gaza’s civilian population of roughly one million people, and the need to maintain international legitimacy.
The IDF stressed that the careful planning is not intended to delay the operation, but rather to maximise its chances of success.
Preparations also include an expansion of humanitarian efforts. Israel is exploring the creation of a direct corridor from the Al-Mawasi area to the field hospital in Rafah, which was established with the participation of the United Arab Emirates.
The conflict stems from Hamas-led militants’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the abduction of 251 hostages.
Most hostages have since been released through ceasefires or negotiated deals, while Hamas maintains that the remaining captives will only be freed in exchange for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.
