Israel sends first trucks with humanitarian aid to Gaza

19 May 2025 13:12

The first trucks carrying humanitarian aid have arrived at the Kerem Shalom crossing to deliver essential supplies to the Gaza Strip, marking a cautious resumption of aid amid ongoing military operations.

A total of nine aid trucks are expected to enter Gaza on May 19, carrying vital produce and basic food items intended to alleviate worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.

The move follows a decision announced on May 18 by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who convened a cabinet meeting to authorise the immediate continuation of humanitarian aid deliveries. The issue, however, was not subjected to a formal vote.

During the cabinet discussion, Israel’s Chief of General Staff proposed that aid also be distributed in northern Gaza and areas where hostilities are ongoing. The proposal was rejected by a majority of cabinet members, who expressed concerns over potential risks to Israeli forces and the possible diversion of supplies to Hamas. Ultimately, it was decided that aid would be distributed only in areas not currently witnessing active combat.

In a statement released by Netanyahu’s office, the government stressed that the decision was based on recommendations from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and aimed at preserving the operational momentum of the ongoing military campaign, codenamed Chariots of Gideon.

"The delivery of humanitarian aid is necessary to prevent a humanitarian crisis that could jeopardize the continuation of the military operation," the statement said. "Israel will ensure the minimum level of food supply required to prevent famine among the civilian population."

According to the statement, Israel will deliver to the Gaza Strip the necessary minimum food for the population in order to prevent a famine that would jeopardise the continuation of the military operation "Chariots of Gideon".

The resumption of aid comes amid international pressure to address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the ongoing conflict have severely disrupted access to food, water, and medical care.

The UN and aid organisations warn that Israel’s new offensive is severely impacting civilians. Over 300 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,000 injured since May 15, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
