Istanbul turns to drones to crack down on taxi violations

21 June 2026 17:00

Drones are being used in central areas of Istanbul, Türkiye, to monitor taxi operations and improve enforcement against violations, according to comments by a board member of the Istanbul Taxi Chamber, Güngör Petek, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Petek said unmanned aerial vehicles are deployed in districts where the highest number of complaints about taxi drivers has been recorded. The system is used to track vehicles previously linked to violations, including monitoring license plates.

The measure comes amid a rise in complaints, particularly from tourists. Reported violations include refusing short-distance trips and failing to comply with fare regulations, such as not activating taximeters.
