Japan’s Taiyo oil buys Russian crude amid Middle East disruptions
Japanese refiner Taiyo Oil has purchased a shipment of Russian Sakhalin Blend crude oil, seeking to stabilise supplies as tensions in the Middle East disrupt key shipping routes.
A company representative told Russia's TASS state media that the Sakhalin Blend grade is not currently subject to international sanctions. The move comes as concerns grow over supply disruptions linked to instability around the Strait of Hormuz.
Taiyo Oil said it is working to ensure a steady flow of crude and is exploring options to diversify imports beyond the Middle East. However, the company has not confirmed whether it plans additional purchases from Russia.
The oil tanker Voyager carrying the shipment is expected to arrive on May 3 at Kikuma Port on Shikoku Island in western Japan.
Japan has faced mounting challenges in securing energy supplies amid the ongoing regional tensions. Up to 95% of the country’s oil imports typically pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
