Japanese party expels MP over visit to Russia
Japanese pro-opposition Japan Renewal Party has expelled MP Muneo Suzuki from its ranks because of his visit to Russia. This was reported by NHK TV channel.
The party's disciplinary committee ruled accordingly, NHK reports.
Suzuki did not notify the party leadership about his trip. Among other things, his statements in an interview with the Russian media caused a negative reaction. For example, the MP said that he was confident in Russia's victory in the conflict with Ukraine and believed in the future of the Russian state.
The MP visited Russia on 1 October. During his visit, he held a number of meetings, including at the level of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko met with him. He noted the Japanese politician's important contribution to the development of bilateral ties.
Government Secretary General Hirokazu Matsuno and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa emphasised that the Japanese Cabinet and Foreign Ministry were not aware of Suzuki's visit to Russia.
