Justice served: Perpetrator of attack on Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran executed
The sentence against the perpetrator of the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran has been carried out.
The death sentence of Yasin Hosseinzadeh was carried out on the morning of May 21, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
To recall, on January 27, 2023, Iranian citizen Yasin Hosseinzadeh carried out an armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran. Armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, he forced his way through the security post and opened fire on the diplomatic mission's staff. As a result of the attack, the head of embassy security, Orkhan Asgarov, was killed, and two other employees — Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov — were wounded.
Following the incident, Azerbaijan evacuated its embassy personnel from Tehran and temporarily suspended the mission's operations.
Iranian authorities initially claimed that the attack was motivated by personal reasons. However, the Azerbaijani side classified the incident as a terrorist act. The Supreme Court of Iran later upheld the death sentence for Hosseinzadeh.
Orkhan Asgarov was buried at the Second Alley of Martyrs in Baku. On February 3, 2023, by decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Orkhan Rizvan oglu Asgarov was posthumously awarded the “For the Motherland” medal. Vasif Natig oglu Taghiyev was awarded the First Class “Courage” Order, and Mahir Kamil oglu Imanov received the “For the Motherland” medal.
